West Virginia has added another arm to its pitching staff with a commitment from Southern New Hampshire transfer pitcher Zak Whitney.

The rising-sophomore right-hander is coming off an impressive freshman season where he was named the NE10 Rookie of the Year after going 7-2 with a 3.89 ERA in 13 starts. Whitney struck out 95 batters over 81.0 innings and threw three complete games while earning first-team all-conference honors.

The 6-foot-3, 195-pound pitcher earned NE10 Rookie of the Week honors three times and was named the league’s Pitcher of the Week once. His 14-strikeout performance was tied for the most in the conference this season. Whitney also earned first-team all-conference honors and was selected to the NE10 All-Rookie Team.

Whitney said West Virginia’s recent success and the coaching staff’s commitment to player development made the program stand out during the recruiting process.

“What Coach Sabins and the rest of the staff are building is unreal. Three straight Super Regional appearances speak for itself. Their dedication and commitment to developing players is what really stood out to me,” he said. “The coaches genuinely want to help you become the best version of yourself, both on and off the field.”

Whitney believes his competitive mindset will allow him to fit in well with the Mountaineers.

“Personally, I’m going to bring competitiveness every single day. I love to compete, and I love being around teammates who push each other to be better,” he said. “If I continue to work hard and stay true to who I am, I’m confident in my ability to make an impact for WVU as a starting pitcher and help contribute to chasing a fourth straight Super Regional appearance.”

For Whitney, the decision ultimately came down to finding the right fit.

“At the end of the day, I truly don’t think there was a better fit for me than West Virginia,” he said. “Everything about this place feels like home.”
